Modern work can turn a screen into the place where meetings, research, design and communication all happen. By late afternoon, discomfort may feel like one problem. It is usually several.
Screen discomfort is not simply a blue-light problem
Dryness, blur, headaches and neck tension are commonly linked to reduced blinking, long periods at one viewing distance, glare, poor contrast and posture. A 2023 Cochrane review found that blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses probably make little or no difference to short-term eye strain from computer use.
That does not make the symptoms imaginary. It means the strongest first steps are practical: blink fully, increase text size, reduce glare, move the screen to a comfortable distance and take regular distance-viewing breaks. Our guide to digital eye strain explains the full picture.
Evening light is a different question
LED displays and indoor lighting include short-wavelength visible light, but spectrum is only part of the signal. In evening and nighttime conditions, controlled research shows that light with higher melanopic content can suppress or delay melatonin and shift circadian timing. The size of the response depends on brightness, duration, timing and prior light exposure.
This is why Everyday Mode’s subtle warm tint and After Hours’ deep red tint should not be discussed as if they do the same job. A tint can change the spectrum reaching the eye; it cannot replace good daytime light, a dimmer evening environment or a consistent sleep schedule.
The useful standard
Ask what a lens measures, across which wavelength band, how visibly it shifts colour and when it is intended to be worn. Be cautious when an optical specification is turned into a promise about comfort, focus or sleep.
ATÉN designs eyewear around those distinctions and states where the evidence stops. Compare Everyday Mode, Focus Mode and After Hours in the ATÉN lens guide, then explore every pairing in the ATÉN collection.
