ATÉN / Our story

The Origins of ATÉN

ATÉN is an independent eyewear house founded in Toronto by Max Mishchenko and Tigran Krivitskiy.

Its origins lie in a shared perspective on design, purpose, and the belief that the objects we choose to wear should reflect more than their function.

Long before the first frame was drawn, Max had developed an interest in light and its relationship with everyday life. Tigran, with a background in competitive judo, had spent years immersed in a world shaped by discipline, precision, and consistency.

Their paths first crossed in college. What began as a friendship gradually developed into a shared ambition to create something of their own.

Through conversations after training and evenings spent discussing their ideas, a common vision began to emerge.

One evening, returning from a run through Toronto, they made the decision to establish ATÉN.

Not simply to introduce another eyewear label, but to create something that reflected their own perspective.

Form Beyond Function

The founders recognized a distinction that had long existed within the eyewear category.

Frames designed around a specific function often placed appearance second. Those created with aesthetics in mind offered a different experience.

ATÉN was conceived without accepting that separation.

The first frame began as a drawing on paper, developed from an original vision rather than selected from an existing catalogue.

Its silhouette, proportions, and material were considered as elements of a complete design. Italian acetate was chosen for its character, while the frame's form was developed to balance distinction with restraint.

The intention was to create eyewear that could stand on its own aesthetically, regardless of the purpose of its lenses.

A considered object, designed to move naturally between different moments of everyday life.

The Meaning of ATÉN

The name draws a connection to Aten, the sun disk of ancient Egypt, reflecting the fascination with light that informed the brand's beginnings.

Rather than translating this reference into literal symbolism, ATÉN expresses its identity through form, material, and a restrained visual language.

The result is an approach to eyewear in which purpose and personal expression are considered together.

An Independent Perspective

ATÉN is shaped by the conviction that good design should not require a choice between appearance and purpose.

Its philosophy extends beyond a particular setting, occasion, or routine.

Created for individuals who value independence of thought and a considered approach to what they wear, ATÉN treats eyewear as an extension of personal identity.

Not an accessory defined solely by its function, but an object chosen for its presence, character, and place in everyday life.
