ATÉN began with two different instincts that eventually became one idea.
When the arena changes
Tigran spent years in competitive judo, where progress came from repetition, precision and showing up long after motivation had disappeared. When the competition changed and screen-based work became part of daily life, that discipline remained—but the environment around it felt completely different.
Max had followed another path. He had long wanted to create designer eyewear with a recognizable silhouette and a point of view of its own. He cared about the line of a frame, the way material holds colour and the quiet details that make something feel considered.
Two perspectives, one idea
Max and Tigran met in college. Friendship became long conversations about the products they used, the work they wanted to build and why functional eyewear so often looked like equipment rather than something a person would choose to wear.
One evening, returning from a run through Toronto, they decided to build the alternative themselves: eyewear that could take purpose seriously without surrendering design.
Why ATÉN exists
The first ATÉN frame began as a drawing, not a catalogue selection. Its silhouette was refined through conversations with manufacturers, material decisions and repeated adjustments to proportion. The goal was not to make a medical device look fashionable. It was to make premium eyewear first, then build a three-mode lens system around the different light environments of a modern day.
ATÉN is still an independent Toronto eyewear house shaped by those two perspectives: discipline and design, purpose and presence. Read the complete ATÉN story, compare the three tints in the lens guide, or explore the ATÉN collection.
